How to make Avocado Pasta Sauce

As always, we will chat about how to make this recipe step-by-step! It’s insanely simple, so there’s not much to remark on, but I will give you all the tips and tricks I can!

  1. Use a Vitamix. You know I’m fiercely loyal to my blender, however you can use a regular blender or food processor to make this recipe without any problems.
  2. Make sure liquid ingredients go in first. Adding the liquid ingredients first makes blending easier.
  3. Stop and stir. Depending on the size of your container, you may need to stop, scrape down the sides, and then continue blending. This is totally normal!
  4. Choose the consistency. the length of time you choose to blend this avocado sauce will determine the amount of chunks of basil present. I like to leave a few because they are pretty and delicious. But if you have kids who will try to pick them all out because eating anything leafy and green is out of the question, I recommend blending until the sauce is completely smooth!

And that’s it! See how easy it is to make this avocado pasta sauce?!

What to serve with Avocado Pasta Sauce

I suggest stirring it into warm foods (pasta, rice, etc.) instead of heating it up by itself because too much heat changes the nature of the avocado. Here are some serving suggestions:

  • Serve it over your favorite pasta (like this homemade whole wheat pasta) or gluten-free pasta!
  • Toss your favorite zucchini noodles (or any other veggie noodles) with this avocado sauce!
  • Mix it into rice or cauliflower rice for a great side dish!
  • Serve it with meatballs: homemade meatballs, chicken meatballs, turkey meatballs.
  • Use it as a creamy dressing for your favorite green salad!
  • My personal preference: I eat this avocado pasta sauce recipe most often with this recipe for balsamic sausage and peppers.

Store/freeze

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or in the freezer for up to 1 month. Try to let as little air as possible get to the sauce so it doesn’t brown by using a container that just fits the amount you need to store, or cover the surface with extra lemon juice.

Recipe FAQs

Can I double this recipe?

Yes, if you are feeding a large crowd this recipe doubles very well. It’s also easier to blend with a larger amount of ingredients!

What goes well with avocado sauce?

Serve it over your favorite pasta (like this homemade whole wheat pasta) or gluten-free pasta!
Toss your favorite zucchini noodles (or any other veggie noodles) with this avocado sauce!
Mix it into rice or cauliflower rice for a great side dish!
Use it as a creamy dressing for your favorite green salad!
My personal preference: I eat this avocado pasta sauce recipe most often with this recipe for balsamic sausage and peppers.

Does avocado sauce turn brown?

Yes, it can turn brown when exposed to oxygen. So I suggest storing it in an airtight container with a drizzle of lemon juice over the surface to prevent browning. It’s best served immediately.

Can you reheat avocado pasta?

Yes, but I suggest heating up the noodles (or other vessel you will be serving it on) and mixing in the sauce and letting the food warm it up for the best results.

Avocado Pasta Sauce: Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Avocados. This recipe calls for two, medium avocados. If you can only find the very large ones, one should do! I do not recommend making any substitutions for avocado, as it is the very essence of this recipe!
  • Fresh Basil. I personally do not think this is optional, and I do not recommend making any substitutions. If you must, dried basil could be used, but it will change the taste of the sauce (but it will still be great)!
  • Olive Oil. Avocado oil can be used in place of olive oil with great results! If you enjoy fancy olive oils…garlic flavored, herb flavored, etc. feel free to get creative and use your favorite!
  • Lemon Juice. Fresh or bottled works great!
  • Minced Garlic. I often substitute garlic powder for the minced garlic. If you love garlic then feel free to add more to suit your tastes!

    1. I love the way you think. I have actually been developing a delicious Mexican-inspired avocado cream sauce and am almost there. I’d suggest using lime juice and cilantro! You can’t go wrong with that combo!
