I drink a smoothie every day, and love making them for my kids to sneak a little nutrition into their days (check out our post with all of our best smoothie recipes). This healthy blueberry smoothie recipe is one of our favorites. It’s easy to make with only 5 ingredients and comes together in less than 5 minutes.
You can add a variety of different mix-ins (like protein powder, spinach, chia seeds, etc.) to this blueberry banana smoothie to make it even more nutritious and protein-packed! The perfect way to fuel any busy day!
Blueberry Smoothie: Ingredients & Substitutions
Let’s discuss the ingredients, as well as possible substitutions in this blueberry banana smoothie recipe.
- Unsweetened almond milk. Any non-dairy milk works well in this recipe (coconut, almond, rice, oat, etc.) You can also use regular dairy milk.
- Frozen blueberries. I always have a bag of wild blueberries (my favorite variety) in my freezer to make this blueberry banana smoothie. If you come across delicious fresh blueberries in the summer for a great price, you can always flash freeze them and then store them in an airtight container in the freezer. Fresh berries can be used also.
- Frozen banana. If you don’t prefer bananas, you can substitute another starchy food like avocado for creaminess, but you will likely need to add more honey/maple syrup to achieve the proper sweetness.
- Vanilla extract. You can leave out the vanilla, but I love the rich flavor it adds to this blueberry smoothie recipe.
- Honey. Maple syrup or agave can be used in place of honey. If your blueberries are very sweet you can omit the sweetener altogether.
- Vanilla protein powder (optional). I love adding a scoop of vanilla protein powder to my smoothies for a protein boost that keeps me full longer. Orgain Vanilla Bean Protein Powder is my favorite.
- Frozen Spinach (optional). If you want to make this a green blueberry smoothie, simply add some frozen spinach, kale, etc. This is optional! Just note that spinach will make this more of a gray/brown smoothie than vibrant purple!
How to Make a Blueberry Smoothie
We’ll walk through how to make a blueberry smoothie – it’s so easy! Don’t forget to watch the video.
Use a Vitamix
I love my blender so much I literally travel with it when we go on vacation (the Explorian model). For the creamiest, most delicious smoothies, use a Vitamix! Also check out my Vitamix Buying Guide.
To make this blueberry banana smoothie recipe, simply add all the ingredients in the order listed in the recipe to the blending container. It’s important to add the almond milk first to ensure a smooth and even blend.
Blend
Next it’s time to blend! Begin blending on low speed and slowly increase to high speed. Blend on high speed for about 50 seconds, or until the mixture is smooth and there are no lumps of unblended ingredients.
Note: If you have a blender with a “smoothie” setting, you can simply secure the lid, press the smoothie button, and let the blender do the work for you.
Serve
Pour the blended healthy blueberry smoothie into 2-4 glasses and enjoy! I find this recipe makes 2 adult servings and 4 kid-sized servings.
Blueberry Smoothie Recipe FAQs
This blueberry smoothie (especially if you add the protein powder and spinach) is packed full of nutrients, antioxidants, protein and fiber.
I suggest NOT putting ice in this smoothie because it waters down the flavors. Instead, use frozen fruit for a thick, cold smoothie.
Here are some suggestions!
Protein powder
Nut butters (like this homemade peanut butter or vanilla almond butter) – for a little fat and protein.
Chia seeds
Collagen protein powder
Greens (dandelion greens, kale, spinach, etc).
Coconut oil
Maca powder
