Spinach Smoothie: Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Almond milk. use your favorite milk – whole milk, 2%, coconut milk, etc.
  • Fresh spinach. Frozen spinach works well too, however make sure you use 2 cups of loosely packed frozen leaves.
  • Frozen Banana. Adding frozen banana to smoothies is the best way to sweeten and impart a smooth texture. Using frozen banana instead of ice ensures the flavor isn’t watered down.
  • Frozen fruit.  you can choose any variety of fruit you would like. I prefer a tropical flair for our spinach smoothie. You can substitute apples, oranges, pears, cherries, strawberries, raspberries, etc. Use a total of 1 cup of fruit. If using fresh fruit (not frozen) freeze your fresh spinach so it is frozen.

How to Make a Spinach Smoothie

Let’s walk through how to make a spinach smoothie together, and don’t forget to watch the video.

Use a Vitamix

For the best smoothies I recommend using a Vitamix blender. Check out this Vitamix Buying Guide to learn why I chose Vitamix 10+ years ago and never looked back!

Add ingredients to blending container

Begin by adding all the ingredients in the order listed in the spinach smoothie recipe to the container of a Vitamix blender (or another high-powered blender).

two photos showing how to make a Spinach Smoothie - adding milk and spinach to a blending container

Add the milk first, then the rest of the ingredients, for easy blending. Then add the honey on top of the frozen fruit so that it doesn’t get stuck to the bottom of the blending container.

Blend the Spinach Smoothie

Once the ingredients are in the blending container, secure the lid and blend until the mixture is smooth – starting on low speed and increasing to high. Use the tamper to press the ingredients to the blades (if using a Vitamix).

Then, blend on high speed for 50-60 seconds until mixture is smooth.

Spinach Smoothie Optional Mix-Ins

You can add some nutritional boosters to this spinach smoothie, here are some suggestions.

  • Greens. Add kale, chard, etc. in place of some of the spinach, if desired.
  • Protein powder. Adding a scoop of vanilla or chocolate protein powder is a great choice.
  • Chia seeds.  for some extra protein and fiber, add 1 tablespoon chia seeds and drink the smoothie immediately.
  • Nut butter. some cashew butter or almond butter (or homemade vanilla almond butter) are great choices.
  • Bee Pollen. I love putting this in my smoothies for flavor and nutrients.

Cherry Smoothie Optional Mix-Ins

You can add some nutritional boosters to this cherry smoothie, here are some suggestions.

  • Cinnamon. I made this optional because not everyone loves cinnamon in their smoothies, however adding ¼ teaspoon makes it taste a little bit like a cold cherry pie – which I am totally here for.
  • Greens. Adding 1 cup of spinach or mixed greens, won’t effect the taste or texture of this smoothie at all. It will change the color, so keep that in mind.
  • Protein powder. Adding a scoop of vanilla or chocolate protein powder (think black forest smoothie) is a great choice.
  • Chia seeds.  for some extra protein and fiber, add 1 tablespoon chia seeds and drink the smoothie immediately.

How to Make a Peach Smoothie

Let’s discuss how to make this banana peach smoothie recipe, and don’t forget to watch the video.

Use a Vitamix Blender

For thick & creamy smoothies I recommend using a Vitamix blender. If you’ve been around my blog for a while then you know my love for my blender runs deep. Check out this Vitamix Buying Guide to learn why I chose Vitamix 10+ years ago and never looked back!

Add Ingredients to Blending Container

Begin by adding all the ingredients in the order listed in the peach smoothie recipe to the container of a Vitamix blender (or another high-powered blender).

It’s important to add the milk first, then add the frozen fruit, for easy blending. I like to add the honey on top of the frozen fruit to ensure it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the blending container.

Peach Smoothie Recipe: Optional Add-Ins

If you’d like to add some nutrition boosters to this banana peach smoothie, here are some suggestions that you can add before you begin blending:

  • More fruit. Add some oranges, strawberries, raspberries, etc. to change up the flavor if you’d like.
  • Greens. Adding 1 cup of spinach or power greens, won’t effect the taste or texture of this smoothie at all. It will change the color, but it’ll taste great and have a bonus serving of veggies!
  • Protein powder. Adding a scoop of vanilla protein powder will both enhance the flavor and deliver a healthy dose of protein
  • Chia seeds.  a nutritional powerhouse that can be added to this peach smoothie. I recommend adding 1-2 TBS and drinking the smoothie immediately.
  • Nut butter. some cashew butter or almond butter (or homemade vanilla almond butter) would taste amazing in this recipe.

Blend

Next, secure the lid and blend the peach smoothie until it’s smooth and uniform throughout. Use the tamper to press the ingredients to the blades (if using a Vitamix).

You may need to pause, scrape down the sides and continue blending to ensure your smoothie is thick and frozen and avoid over-blending. The mixture should be smooth but thick.

Serve

Once blended, pour the peach smoothie into 2-4 glasses and serve immediately.

Store/Freeze

You can store this banana peach smoothie in a glass jar with a lid for up to 1 day in the refrigerator or 1 month in the freezer. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Greek yogurt. I suggest a full-fat yogurt such as a plain or vanilla Greek yogurt, or a plain or vanilla Icelandic yogurt.

  • Vanilla extract. you can use vanilla bean paste or omit if desired. However, if you’re going for a peaches and cream flavor definitely use vanilla!
  • Frozen Peaches. you can use fresh summer peaches that have been sliced and frozen (preference), or store-bought frozen peaches. I suggest making sure they’re frozen to your smoothie is thick and cold like a milkshake!

How to Make A Smoothie https://joyfoodsunshine.com/how-to-make-a-smoothie/ https://joyfoodsunshine.com/how-to-make-a-smoothie/#comments Sun, 03 Apr 2022 09:33:00 +0000 https://joyfoodsunshine.com/?p=41688 I drink a smoothie every day! In this post I share my tips and teach you how to make a smoothie & share our favorite smoothie recipes! Making smoothies is easy, healthy and delicious.

How to Make A Smoothie - green smoothie in a glass

I drink a smoothie every day, and have for over a decade.

I’m not exaggerating either, I pack my blender (Vitamix, of course) and take it with me whenever we travel. I love starting my day with a glass full of fruit, greens and protein.

It’s really easy to learn how to make a smoothie, since all of our smoothie recipes are made in less than 5 minutes!

Once you learn how to make smoothies that are nutritious and delicious – even your kids will enjoy them! I love making smoothies to sneak some fruits, veggies and protein into our daily lives in a way my kids absolutely love.

So, I’m going to break down how to make smoothies and I include a list of all of my favorite easy smoothie recipes.

How to Make A Smoothie - mom making a smoothie with her two kids

How to make a Smoothie Tip #1: Use a High-Powered blender

The first step in learning how to make a smoothie is to understand that not all blenders are created equal.

I bought my first Vitamix because I was sick of chunky smoothies. I have not-so-fond memories of literally trying to make a smoothie in my food processor because I had one, and spending money on a fancy blender was a stretch for us financially. The chunks of spinach made me gag, and we decided to buy a reconditioned Vitamix (that is still blending strong 11 years later).

I wanted a blender that would pulverize anything and everything I put into my smoothies and the Vitamix was the answer (plus I used it to make baby food)!

Check out my Vitamix Buying Guide where I give my exhaustive reasons for choosing a Vitamix blender a decade ago, and my top recommendations about which model to buy!

How to Make Smoothies Tip #2: Add Liquids First

When making a smoothie, it’s important to always add the liquid ingredients into the blending container first. This ensures the other ingredients don’t get stuck under the blades. It also creates a vortex that pulls everything into the blades for a smooth blend.

Best Liquids for Smoothies

I always use some sort of non-dairy milk in my smoothies because I think it gives them the best taste and texture. However there are many different liquids that could be used:

  • Almond Milk (my personal favorite)
  • Coconut Milk
  • Any percentage of dairy milk
  • Rice Milk
  • Oat Milk
  • Cashew Milk
  • Coconut Water
  • Water (not recommended, but can be used)

How to Make a Smoothie Tip #3 Use Frozen Ingredients

Using frozen fruit and greens is crucial to making the thickest, creamiest smoothies. You’ll notice I typically do not use ice in my smoothie recipes, because it waters down the flavor and gives smoothies an icy texture – of which I am not a fan.

Fruits for Smoothies

Here are some suggestions for fruits to use to make the best smoothies (all frozen, of course).

  • bananas
  • mango
  • pineapple
  • strawberries
  • blueberries
  • raspberries
  • peaches
  • cherries

I typically like to add the greens first, then the frozen fruit on top to help push the greens into the blades. However, you can choose which order to put them in!

How to Make A Smoothie: Tip #4 Pre-portion Add-ins.

I prefer to measure out all the add-ins I want in my smoothies and store them in small containers that are ready to go in the mornings. This way I am not trying to find the perfect combination of protein powders, seeds, etc. during the busy and often rushed hours of the mornings.

Blend & Tamp

Finally, once you have put all of the ingredients in your blender (liquids first, remember), it’s time to blend. Be sure the lid is secure. Always start blending on low speed and increase to high.

I have my smoothie making down to a science and I almost always blend my smoothies for 50 seconds exactly. Make sure to keep pressing the ingredients down into the blades with the tamper (if you’re using a Vitamix), and blend until the mixture is completely smooth.

Smoothie Making FAQS

How do you freeze bananas for smoothies?

In my opinion, bananas are an essential ingredient to make the best healthy smoothies for both natural sweetness and a creamy texture. So, make sure to purchase bananas designated to freeze for smoothies when you go grocery shopping.
To freeze bananas for smoothies, let the bananas ripen then cut them into halves or thirds. Flash freeze on a baking sheet, then transfer to an airtight, freezer-friendly container to store!

How do you freeze greens to use in smoothies?

Freeze Greens
If using greens, I recommend freezing them for thick cold smoothies – however you don’t really have to. I usually just buy large containers of greens at the store and put them directly in the freezer so I always have some on hand.
Blend and freeze greens in cubes
If you don’t have a lot of space in your freezer, you can take fresh greens and blend them with a small amount of water until the mixture is smooth. Then freeze in ice cube trays and store frozen cubes of greens in an airtight container in the freezer. I used to do this when we lived in a condo and didn’t have an extra freezer in the basement!

What liquid do you put in smoothies?

My top recommendations are: almond milk, coconut milk, whole milk, coconut water and oat milk.

Do you put ice in a smoothie?

No. I usually choose to use frozen ingredients instead of putting ice in my smoothies.

Do you need yogurt in smoothies?

No, yogurt isn’t a necessary ingredient in smoothies. It adds protein, flavor and creaminess but it isn’t required to make smoothies.

Can I just blend frozen fruit?

You really do need at least a splash of liquid to make a smoothie, so If you’d prefer to just use frozen fruit you can always use water as the liquid so that the ingredients will blend.

How do you thicken smoothies?

My favorite way to thicken smoothies is using frozen ingredients or yogurt.

When I am craving warm sandy beaches and the sound of the ocean weaves, I head into the kitchen and make this tropical smoothie! It is like a beach vacation in a glass (also try our mango smoothie and pineapple smoothie recipes).

This dairy-free recipe is delicious my kids request it often. It’s a sunshine-y addition to breakfast or lunch, and even makes a great healthy dessert.

Tropical Smoothie Recipe: Ingredients & Substitutions

Note – this recipe is the best (thick and creamy) when you use frozen fruit. If using fresh it will be thinner.

  • Lite Coconut milk. Something I love about this tropical smoothie recipe is that it’s best when made with canned coconut milk. This means I always have some on hand in the pantry to make this smoothie. I use a lite variety, but any canned coconut milk works well. You can also substitute an almond/coconut milk or another dairy or non-dairy milk.
  • Frozen Banana. Adding frozen banana to smoothies is my favorite way to sweeten a recipe and impart an irresistibly creamy texture. Using frozen banana means that you don’t need to add ice to make it thick and cold.
  • Frozen Pineapple and Mango. I always keep frozen pineapple and mango on hand in the freezer (hello pineapple smoothie and mango smoothie). It’s convenient and frozen fruit is always picked and frozen at the peak of ripeness, so it’s sweet and full of nutrients. You can use fresh pineapple or mango if you have them on hand. Or you can buy fresh pineapple or mango, cut it up, and freeze it.
  • Honey. This is optional but recommend for the best flavor. You can also use pure maple syrup to keep this recipe vegan.
  • Vanilla extract. The addition of pure vanilla extract takes this tropical smoothie recipe makes it special, I don’t suggest omitting it.

How to Make a Tropical Smoothie

Let’s discuss how to make this recipe, and don’t forget to watch the video.

Begin by adding all the ingredients in the order listed in the tropical smoothie recipe to the container of a Vitamix blender (or another high-powered blender).

It’s important to add the coconut milk first, then add the frozen fruit, for easy blending. I like to add the honey on top of the frozen fruit to ensure it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the blending container.

Tropical Smoothie Recipe: Optional Add-Ins

If you’d like to add some nutrition boosters to this tropical smoothie, here are some suggestions that you can add before you begin blending:

  • More fruit. Strawberries, papaya, raspberries, guavas, etc. can be used in place of some of the mango/pineapple.
  • Greens. Adding 1-2 cups of spinach or power greens, won’t effect the taste or texture of this tropical smoothie at all. It will change the color to green, but it’ll taste great and have a bonus serving of veggies!
  • Kale. If you’d like to add kale, I recommend adding 1 cup. Kale has a stronger flavor than spinach and could effect the taste.
  • Protein powder. Adding a scoop of vanilla protein powder will both enhance the flavor and deliver a healthy dose of protein
  • Chia seeds.  a nutritional powerhouse that can be added to this tropical smoothie. I recommend adding 1-2 TBS and drinking the smoothie immediately.

Blend

Next, secure the lid and blend the tropical smoothie until it’s smooth and uniform throughout. Use the tamper to press the ingredients to the blades (if using a Vitamix).

You may need to pause, scrape down the sides and continue blending to ensure your smoothie is thick and frozen and avoid over-blending. The mixture should be smooth but thick.

Serve

Once blended, pour the tropical smoothie into 2-4 glasses and serve immediately. I suggest adding a cute little tropical umbrella if you’re trying to make a fun snack for your kids!

Store/Freeze

You can store this tropical smoothie in a glass jar with a lid for up to 2 days in the refrigerator or 1 month in the freezer. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
